Voyager 2 observations related to the October – November 2003 solar events

چکیده
[1] A transient flow system observed at 1 AU from October 24–November 7, 2003 (consisting of several shocks, ejecta and possibly other flows) moved away from the Sun for 180 days to 73 AU, where Voyager 2 (V2) observed a large Merged Interaction Region (MIR) associated with a fast (560 km/s) stream that followed a forward shock and moved past V2 for 1.5 solar rotations. The MIR and stream were associated with a large decrease in the cosmic ray intensity and an exceptionally large enhancement in the flux of 2.5 MeV protons. The speed and the cosmic ray profiles observed by V2 were very simple, resembling the profiles of a shock/sheath/ejecta flow and a Forbush decrease, respectively, at 1 AU, but rescaled by a factor by a factor of 10. The onset of the MIR-associated decrease in the cosmic ray intensity occurred 10 days after the shock, lasting several days, with a full recovery 70 days after the onset. Citation: Burlaga, L. F., N. Propagation of the October/November 2003 CMEs through the heliosphere
[1] The solar storms of late October, early November 2003 generated many ICMEs. The Wind, ACE, Ulysses, Cassini, Voyager 2, and Voyager 1 spacecraft are distributed throughout the heliosphere and observe the effects of these ICMEs. We investigate whether these ICMEs form a global merged interaction region. WIND, ACE, and IMP 8 data are combined to produce a plasma and magnetic field data set fo...
متن کاملOn radial heliospheric magnetic fields: Voyager 2 observation and model
[1] The heliospheric magnetic field (HMF) direction, on average, conforms well to the Parker spiral. However, numerous examples of events where the HMF is oriented in nearradial directions for many hours have been reported on the basis of observations inside 5 AU from spacecraft such as ISEE-3 and Ulysses. The magnetic field data observed by Voyager 2 from launch in 1977 through the end of 1982...
متن کاملVoyager 2 Observations of Helium Abundance Enhancements from 1 - 60 AU
The Plasma Science experiment on the Voyager 2 spacecraft recently detected helium abundance enhancements (HAEs) near 60 AU in which the alpha percentage is 10%. These large values may result from solar events related to the rising phase of solar cycle 23. Large He/H ratios are probably the best signature for tracking CMEs through the outer heliosphere. We analyze the high resolution spectra fo...

متن کاملDevelopment of a strong shock in the outer heliosphere
On October 16, 2001, Voyager 2 at ∼65 AU observed a strong shock with a speed jump of over 100 km s−1, the strongest shock observed since 1991. However, unlike for many large shocks observed in the outer heliosphere, we could not find a single solar event which is directly linked to this shock. Instead, a series of solar events in April 2001 is found to be responsible. A multi-fluid one-dimensi...
